2.3. Distribution of Funding
The EC financial contribution received by Greek organisations in FP7-HEALTH projects was 46,15
Mio euros which represents about 1% of total EC funding. The EC financial contribution received
by Greek organisations in IMI projects was 2,98 Mio euros which represents about 0,4% of total
EC funding
The average EC financial contribution (FP7-HEALTH & IMI) for MS & AC was 143,5 Mio Euros,
three times higher than the EC funding received by Greece. With 49,1 Mio. Euros of EC funding,
Greece is located in 16

position in a ranking list led by UK (959 Mio Euros), Germany (899 Mio.
Euros) & France (625 Mio. Euros). When considering EC contribution weighted by population
(Euros per inhabitant), Greece (4,3) is located in 20
th
position in a ranking list led by Iceland (72,1)
The Netherlands (34,6) & Sweden (33).
The average EC financial contribution per participation is 400000 Euros considering all countries,
compared to 330000 Euros per participant for Greece.
Of the 5,5 Bio. Euros distributed by the EC, 87% (4,8 Bio Euros) went to the EU 15 countries, 7%
(378 Mio Euros) went to Associated Countries, 3% (145 Mio. Euros) to International Cooperation
Partners countries (ICPC), 2% (142 Mio. Euros) to EU 13 countries & 1% (65 Mio. Euros) to other
Third countries. Switzerland has received over 220 Mio. Euros of EC funding (60% of EC
contribution for AC). USA (51,8 Mio Euros) followed by India (16,9 Mio. Euros) & South Africa (11,5
Mio. Euros) were at the top of the list for EC contributions to Third Countries.
As shown in Chart 9, 51% (2,8 Bio Euros) of the total EC contribution went to academia, 24% (1,34
Bio Euros) to research organisations, 18% (1 Bio Euros) to SMEs, 3% (181 Mio euros) to industry,
3% (149 Mio euros) to other public organisations & 1% (49 Mio euros) to other types of
organisation.
The top 10 organisations in Greece, based on EC contribution received, in decreasing order are:
the Medical School of the National & Kapodistrian University of Athens (7,81 Mio Euros), the
Foundation for Research & Technology Hellas (4,40 Mio Euros), the Biomedical Research
Foundation of the Academy of Athens (7,17 Mio Euros), the Foundation for Research & Technology
Hellas (4,40 Mio Euros), the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (3,30 Mio Euros), the Hellenic
Health Foundation (2,94 Mio Euros), the University of Ioannina (1,9 Mio Euros), the National
Hellenic Research Foundation (1,64 Mio Euros), the University of Patras (1,42 Mio Euros) and the
Hellenic Pasteur Institute (1,34 Mio. Euros). These 10 organisations have obtained 72% (35,4 Mio
Euros) of the FP7-HEALTH & IMI funds received by Greece.
