The conference highlighted the economic dimension of open data. The multiple financial benefits
that can be gained are exploited by the private sector, even if the legal issues which accompany the
use of these data, such as protection of personal data and the lack of favourable regulations and a
legal framework, inhibit their open accessibility.

The following two days of the conference focused on the development and implementation of Open
Access policies in research, in accordance with the European Commission’s policies. It was evident
that open access to research results is now the prevailing trend on a European and international
level, with important initiatives being implemented in all European countries, including Greece.
