Developing common European policies for
innovative use of public and scientific information
Open Data and Open Access to publicly funded scientific information and Public Administration has
come to stay. This was the overall conclusion of thewell-attended, three-day International Conference
‘Open Access @ EKT’- Towards Common European Policies for Innovative Reuse of Public Sector
and Scientific Information’ which we held 16-18 October in Athens. The conference was the third of
a series of international conferences focusing on Open Access in scientific knowledge which have
been held since 2008 at the NHRF – National Hellenic Research Foundation.
The conference was an opportunity for specialists in Open Access, representatives of organisations
which are active in policy-making for research, researchers, students and all those interested in
learning the latest developments with regard to Open Access in Greece and Europe to get together
and share opinions.

The speakers, who are renowned for their activities in the area of Open Access, included university
representatives, researchers and public administrators from Greece, Europe and the USA. Maire
Geoghegan - Quinn, European Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science also addressed
the conference via video. She emphasised on how essential Open Access to research results
produced by European projects is. Octavi Quintana Trias, the Director of the European Research Area
also referred to the importance of Open Access as did representatives of European organisations
such as the European University Association, the League of European Research universities and
Science Europe.
