From documentation
to semantic representation
The concept and practice of documentation is radically changing in the
21st century. From an area which interested few, it has developed into a
‘multi-tool’ for all knowledge intensive industries. As we move forward
in this era of the semantic web and the internet of things, semantic
representation and linking are becoming the basic information
infrastructure for all aspects of society, industry, education, research
and economic activities.
From social networks to control of industrial production, digital
educational resources and the production of new knowledge, semantic
representation ensures the creation of digital content which is
discoverable, manageable and reusable.
So as to remain at theheight of technological evolution, our rolehas had
to change. We have achieved this by developing a horizontal electronic
infrastructure for the production, diffusion and use of knowledge.
Typically, this has meant the adoption of open standards and software
at all levels of infrastructure, as well as applying Green IT to ensure
perpetual preservation and low environmental costs.
